Types of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that gained more and more interest every day. To be more easy to understand and to be treated it was divided in five major subtypes based on the symptoms of the patient.


Paranoid schizophrenia is the most common form of schizophrenia. People with this kind of schizophrenia look normal until a point when something disturbs them and will come out their problems.

Delusions and auditory hallucinations predominate while their affective and cognitive functioning remain relatively intact. This kind of persons usually believe that are watched, followed or persecuted, that they have special missions to accomplish and others are enemies and they must stop them.

Family and friends have a major role in finding this patients problems, cause they are those who can find out the changes made in their loved ones behavior.

Disorganized schizophrenia : as the name says, is characterized by a disorganized behavior and disorganized speech, usual and daily activities such as eating, speaking, washing, are affected. Family observes changes in the way of speaking, behavior and that makes them talk with a doctor.

These patients have moods and emotions that are not proper for the situation that they are a part of, and in time become apathetic.

Finally, is affected the way they think; these persons are incoherent, you don’t understand what they want to say because they pass from a subject to another without finishing the first idea that they had.

Catatonic schizophrenia : is rare and is an advanced form of schizophrenia. Patients have psychomotor disturbances and they can stay unmoved for hours. Echolalia or movements echopraxia are present to.

Residual type : is characterized by a previous diagnoses of schizophrenia, but no longer having any of the prominent psychotic symptoms. The person might not currently suffer from delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech and behavior, or their intensity is reduced.

Undifferentiated subtype : is characteristic to patients who fail to meet the criteria for the other subtypes but clearly suffer from this mental disorder.
